Local Composting: Creating Climate Change Solutions & Building Healthy Soils
One of the best ways to immediately reduce methane, an exceptionally powerful greenhouse gas, is to keep organic matter out of landfills and turn it into compost. Using that finished compost can increase the ability of healthy soils and plants to pull even more carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere — REVERSING climate change.
In 2001, Boulder County built its own recycling facility to help the community reach its recycling goals. It’s time to do the same to help us reach our compost goals. More than 40 percent of the waste stream from county residents and businesses is compostable. By combining advanced composting technology with community carbon farming, we can create a climate action model for other communities to follow.
As an environmental education and advocacy organization, SRL will continue to champion local composting solutions. Want to get involved in our work? Email us to join our Compost Action list and we'll keep you updated on local composting initiatives, like Eco-Cycle's work to build a Circular Community Compost System in Boulder County.
