Example City Climate Plans

City of Fort Collins
Climate Action Plan 1999, 2008, expected revision 2015

City of Fort Collins - Climate Protection

Fort Collins has been a leader in climate protection for almost two decades, starting with their first GHG reduction goal and plan in 1999.   Through leadership and involvement by many, emissions are below 2005 baseline while the population and economy, as measured by Sales and Use Tax revenue, grew.  After careful consideration of alternatives, Fort Collins' City Council has asked that the Climate Action Plan be updated for their future consideration to meet the following visionary community GHG emissions reduction objectives:

  • 20% below 2005 levels by 2020
  • 80% below 2005 levels by 2030
  • 100% below 2005 levels by 2050 (Carbon neutral)

Watch a discussion on the Climate Action Plan on the City's Full Circle Cable 14 TV show.

City of Boulder
Climate Action Plan (2004, 2006, 2010)

Boulder’s Climate Commitment is the city’s integrated planning initiative to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from both city operations and the community at large. This initiative, which builds on the Climate Action Plan initially developed in 2004 and updated in 2006 and 2010, is integrating climate action elements into departmental master plans, developing a new GHG inventory based on updated protocols, and creating new metrics and tools to provide more meaningful and timely feedback on progress. In July 2013, council provided preliminary direction to establish a new community goal of 80 percent GHG reductions below 1990 levels by 2050.

The Colorado Climate Action Plan sets two greenhouse-gas reduction goals:

  • 20% below 2005 levels by 2020
  • 80% below 2005 levels by 2050

Former Gov. Bill Ritter on climate change:

"Climate change is our generation's greatest environmental challenge. It threatens our economy, our Western way of life and our future. It will change every facet of our existence, and unless we address it and adapt to it, the results will be catastrophic for generations to come.

"I strongly believe we can make a difference. In setting and achieving the goals in this Colorado Climate Action Plan, we will continue to expand the New Energy Economy, show leadership as a state, increase our energy security, and call on the federal government to take strong action."
